The Sunday before Christmas, I managed to work my way past the long line of cars in the street at the Keizer shopping center full of people “patiently” waiting for their chance to buy a burger from In-N-Out. Earlier this summer, we read news accounts of a person literally being stabbed to death over a Popeye’s chicken sandwich, along with other accounts of fist fights and such. While I like and admire how In-N-Out has grown from its humble Southern California beginnings and Popeye’s red beans and rice dish is a little bit of heaven in a cup, a little perspective is needed. It is still just fast food, people; surely we can find better use of our time and passions. Waiting two hours for some charred bovine flesh or getting into violent altercations over a chunk of fowl can’t be the apex of human endeavors, can it?
