Have you eaten at The Forks Resort? A glowing column in the New Yorker by food writer Helen Rosner may make you want to drive all they way to Bass Lake just to try one of the restaurant's hamburgers.
The lodge is situated on Bass Lake, just south of Yosemite National Park. The food is nothing fancy. In addition to burgers, the restaurant serves chicken-fried steak, salads and breakfast scrambles. A burger costs $5.50 and a cheeseburger is $6.25.
But it might have been the best $6 Rosner ever spent. Describing a pit-stop at the resort's restaurant in 2015, she writes:
"...the burger was heaven on a bun, a juicy, crackle-edged beef patty dressed with pickles, iceberg lettuce, thick rounds of tomato and onion, and a drench of tart thousand-island dressing. It was the most beautiful hamburger in the whole beautiful, beautiful world."
How could the best burger in the world be found at a random Bass Lake lodge? Rosner spends the first part of her column, a retrospective on the best foods she has eaten in the last decade, explaining just how subjective food — and writing about food — is. She explains: "...your tongue is no one else’s tongue; your nose is unique; your sense of pleasure and labor and price is yours alone."
That being said, Rosner is not alone in her admiration of the Forks Resort burger. "THE BEST BURGER. I would truly rather be eating a forks burger for the rest of my days," reads on Yelp review from 2018.

Another review echoes the mouthwatering description in the New Yorker: "The burgers are thin patties cooked on an old griddle that gives it an amazing flavor, served on a bed of shredded lettuce, thinly sliced onions, sliced tomatoes and pickles topped with thousand island dressing on a bun."
