Ring in the new year with top-notch burgers: Gerry Frank’s picks - OregonLive

Happy New Year! The last decade has been huge for the growth of Oregon’s capital city – especially in regards to the food and beverage scene, and with the recent opening of In-N-Out Burger (6280 Keizer Station Boulevard, Keizer; 800-786-1000; in-n-out.com), I don’t see things slowing down anytime soon. This California-based burger joint has been long known for their always fresh, never frozen, burgers and if you’ve ever questioned if they really are worth it – just ask their patrons who continue to wait hours in line (often after driving an hour-plus) just to get a bite, even weeks after opening.

Needless to say, the response overall has continued to be positive; people just can’t get enough of their simple yet perfectly cooked classic-style burgers (topped with fresh lettuce, tomato, onion and their Thousand Island-like special sauce). Whether you want to double up on your patties, skip the bun or get your meal animal-style, you can do it here. Tip: skip the drive-thru line and head straight inside as the line tends to be much less-intimidating, or opt for a morning burger before the lunch rush. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday; until 1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Don’t forget a chocolate shake!

The Yard Food Park (4106 State Street, Salem; 503-385-8066; theyardfoodpark.com) opened in Salem just over a year ago and with 14 food carts to choose from (and more to come in the New Year), it’s quickly become a top choice for food truck dining in the area. The food park surrounds a rustic, warehouse-like building which offers ample seating (and a play area for kids), espresso and a full-service bar with more than 20 beers on tap. Depending on the weather, you may see folks getting cozy by the fire pit or playing bar games outside. Weekends often offer live music, and there always seems to be enough entertainment to go around. The parking can definitely use some work, but I wouldn’t let that deter you; there’s not many places around here that offer this much variety. So where should one start? Bulletproof Meals will likely gain popularity in the New Year; guests can enjoy a healthy meal right then and there or they can sign up for a meal service to set them up for a week of clean eating. Will ya look at that?! also serves up healthy, locally-sourced meals. Enjoy fantastic Thai food at the Jasmine Flower Thai Kitchen; the stir-fry, pineapple fried rice and drunken noodles are especially good. Other dining options include Father Hen’s Texas BBQ, Eddy’s Philly Cheesesteaks, authentic Indian cuisine at Spicee Bite, gyros and Mediterranean favorites at Gyropoulos, delicious desserts at Street Sweets and so much more from poke bowls all the way to pizza. General hours of the food park are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, extended to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and until 9 p.m. Sunday; visit their website for special event listings.
