Top 10 Best Burger Restaurants in the San Antonio area - San Antonio Express-News

Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese ... yada, yada, yada. Forget about that famous jingle because the San Antonio area is loaded with top-flight, local destinations that deliver a superior burger-eating experience.

We can say this with authority after munching our way up and down the burger menus of 52 spots for our year-long 52 Weeks of Burgers series, leaving piles of soiled napkins and plastic baskets in our wake.

The goal was to identify the best burgers being made at true burger joints, places where burgers are the main focus of the menu. And even that list was so large, we ran out of weeks to visit them all.

10. Burger Boy: San Antonio’s best fast-food burger destination is an assembly line of consistency, with sizzling beef patties served on top of a bed of yellow mustard, chopped white onion, pickles and a slice of tomato. Pair it with the signature crinkles-cut fries and the Orange Freeze. Multiple locations, Online: burgerboysa.com

9. Big’z Burger Joint: Operating from a North Side building that looks like a truck warehouse, Big’z starts with some of the best beef in this series, then kicks into high gear with upscale french fry sauces and burger extras like blue cheese, beer-braised onions and fried eggs. 2303 N. Loop 1604 W., 210-408-2029, Online: bigz-burgerjoint.com

8. Freiheit Country Store: Freiheit (pronounced FRY-hite) has been serving New Braunfels for more than 125 years, evolving into a place for cold beer, chicken-fried steak and banana-cream pie. But the real stars are burgers made with fresh beef and local bakery buns, plus handcut fries and some of the best onion rings in this series. 2157 FM 1101, New Braunfels, 830-625-9400, freiheitcountrystore.net

7. Mad Mack’s Burger Co.: The hand-formed, freshly ground beef provides the anchor for this family-owned South Side burger destination that takes the extras seriously with creamy guacamole, gooey queso, and bold chili options. 2933 Roosevelt Ave., 210-922-1500, Facebook: Mad-Macks-Burger-Co

6. Kicaster Country Store & Grill: Tucked away inside a rural convenience store, owner and chef Scott Hudson brings a farm-to-table approach to his burger menu with Black Angus meat sourced from a nearby rancher and housemade pickles and other toppings. 2239 FM 3432, Adkins, 830-865-1317, Facebook: kicastercountry

5. Cheesy Jane’s: This Broadway hot spot combines the rowdy clamor of a ’50s burger joint with the utilitarian charm of a converted gas station, turning out a wide variety of burgers (try the Southwest) and a list of malts and shakes more than 25 long. 4200 Broadway, 210-826-0800, Online: cheesyjanes.com

4. Muck & Fuss: Buns sourced from Texas’ oldest bakery, and burgers loaded with creative ingredients such as Mexican street corn, goat cheese and crispy onion strings form the backbone to this New Braunfels burger newcomer. 295 E. 3. Chris Madrid’s: After months selling burgers out of trailer on its Beacon Hill lot, Chris Madrid’s is back inside the building where the legend started in 1977. 2. The Cove: This quirky Five Points neighborhood destination, which also offers a car wash and laundry service, hits hard on grass fed beef, but also delivers burgers loaded with bison and lamb meat options, as well as a standout vegan bacon cheeseburger, all using farm-fresh ingredients. 606 W. Cypress St., 210-227-2683, Online: thecove.us

1. Mr. Juicy: This Olmos Park hole-in-the-wall burger shop from superstar chef Andrew Weissman keeps it simple: single or double burgers with or without cheese, fries, shakes, a few add-ons. But they all perform at the top of their game, with a basic burger starting at the almost fast-food price of $4. 3910 McCullough Ave., Suite 102, 210-994-9838, no web presence
